Ziad Maher Goes For The British Rocker Look

He might be the only or the first Lebanon based singer to sport an earring. Sleek Ziad Maher has a new single out and this is the follow up for his first pop songs to be filmed earlier this year. Ziad is going for the British rock star and outfit look. He is soft-spoken, and most of the set felt like a posh club with many young women.

I spoke to Mr. Maher before and he seems like a nice guy who is trying to launch a music career. The new music video is about dance, since the western beat makes it so easy. This is not a cheap music video, Fadi Hadad is the director here. The song usually makes it to the local radios and then possibly get aired in Egypt.

Ziad already has finished his album, but he and his team await things to improve in Lebanon to make their splash.

Moroccan Ahmed Chawki Mingles With Star Academy @ChawkiOfficial

In case you have not been paying attention, Star Academy is still in full Swing. I know in between Arab Idol, X Factor, the Voice, and Arabs Got Talent, you may be lost for a bit. But Star Academy would love it if you tuned in and followed their stars and news.

The young people who appear on the program are counting on your attention. Like the charismatic Ahmed Chawki who comes form Morocco and with the backing of Red One as a producer, he is already ahead of his peers. But he is not competing on the LBC program, he was a guest.

He seems like a busy young artist whose talent defies languages and cultures, a man of many many tongues. It all started in 2013, Chawki released his debut single "Habibi I Love You" featuring the international pop star, Pitbull, which was produced and co-written by RedOne. With over 27 million views on YouTube,

#1 in Morocco, #5 in the Netherlands and #37 in France on the official iTunes charts, Chawki established himself as an artist to watch in the MENA and throughout Europe.

Due to the single’s success, many great artists showed interest in collaborating with Chawki. Most recently, Magic System collaborated with Chawki & RedOne on their new single "Magic In The Air" which became a big hit in France (#9 iTunes and #1 in Clubs).

"Resalet Amal" Dispenses Hope For People Living With Cancer

Jordanian pop artist Tony Qattan survived a serious disease and a liver transplant. So he pledged to support charities and clinics that look after the ones in need of medical attention. He got a number of young artists to join his drive.

In this song, you will see Josef, Tony, and other stars who are about hope and the next day about cherishing every second as if it was a gift. Hope is what these little ones need. This is an activism we all agree on, you are still alive so do not give up, dream big.

This is a person song for so many who have had children with illness. No one should live with that alone. I am glad these artists have stepped up to offer their celebrity status as a mean to spread smiles. So this is why the song has been titled, a message of hope.

Lebanese Legend Sabah AL Shahroura Laid To Rest (Video)

Sabah was a Lebanese singer who perfected sentimental ballads and melodramatic movies but not the art of marriage. Along the way she gained a reputation for being something of a diva. A glamorous performer, she was frequently compared to Cher and Madonna.

Droves of celebrities, politicians, friends, fans and family cam out to attend her burial service. She was showered with so much love at the time of her death. And that was one hell of a festival. Lots of music, dance, noise, fireworks. See some of those folks speak on camera about what Sabah meant for them. even the army sent their marching band to perform.

Sabah, who has died aged 87, was a Lebanese singer who recorded more than 50 albums, acted in some 80 films, had 3,500 songs in her repertoire and was reported to have been married nine times; her stage name – meaning “Morning” – hinted at her fondness for a new dawn. Along with the singers Fairuz and Wadih El Safi, and the composer Zaki Nassif, she was one of a quartet of Lebanese musical icons. At the videos below, you will see more celebrities than the biggest award ceremony.

Seriously, no one stayed at home on that day, all those who sing and act came out to her service, even former husbands. They had nothing but love for her. She did live long and she kept the dream alive.
Sabah was considered daring and provocative, and she tested the boundaries of what was acceptable for a woman in the conservative Arab world. Although a Maronite Christian, she gained a popularity that transcended religious boundaries, even during the civil war of 1975–90.

Sabah asked people who came to her service not to wear black, so white was the color of choice. Sabah was a trailblazer, she paved the way for many females in the Arab world. She was bold and she let her thoughts be known. She means so many things to so many different people. She is an icon for all sects and ethnicities, cultures, and political persuasions in the Arabic world

Copying American Culture...Poorly "POP UP" @Angela_Mrad

Some Arabs are trying too hard to look and talk Western. The Saudi production company Rotana has a new program and it's about American music videos. The show is filmed in Lebanon with a host from that country. So far, this is pretty much standard.

The new program "Pop Up" is being hosted by a lady who is dressed like she was from some American ghetto in 1995. No one said this cannot make a comeback. But whatever happened to Arabic music being different? These guys are erasing the lines, and copying blindly anything they see. Americans won't like everyone being like them--this is why Iranian cinema wins with their unique and local stories.

Angela Mrad's show will talk a lot about American music videos, and what's popular in America. It's a new statement that Arabic music is either dead or lacks creativity. I think America can teach us a lot of things, but these shows only mimic the wrong things. Angela has a sense of fashion and style, no doubt....this show is a dud.

What you end up with is a product that does not have a soul nor does it have a flavor. Neither Americans will be tuning in, and very few grown ups in Arabia would care to follow. I wish the program well, and the TV host.

Egypt's Ahmed El Essawy New Naked Music Video "Scandalous"

Shit happens in Egypt more often nowadays. Pop music is also going through a trash phase that turns off even the closest of its fans. Like this weirdo Ahmed El Essay, whose idea of music video is to look women in some parking lot and while they surround him dancing. Not to overlook the random fashion choices.

I am not even talking about the song its music or its lyrics--it's real insult of pop music. The selling point is young women wearing bikinis and a guy well-dressed. I am sure if you are below the age of 18 you will enjoy this crap fest, I have no clue who this guy is. But he might be out there trying to tell people he is a cool clown. The thing is that he is not even that young.

This is not a song in the real sense, it might be for some, but when it boils down to is a guy who has no class and young women who were paid to show more.

Rana Samaha Sings For "Mareed Nafsany" That Nutjob @ranasamaha9t

Young songstress Rana Samaha is still paving her own way. Years since her days on Star Academy are over, she keeps releasing new songs, one single after the other. She is a cool pop personality that engages her fans often. But I have not seen her in any big public concerts. She does a lot of TV appearances, but concerts is where business thrives.

No question, she is a popular voice among the youth, she is a girl and she is proud of who she is. There are lots of musicians in Egypt who pursue her to collaborate with them--one composer even signed her.

Take the song below, she is in love with a nut job guy whom she thinks suffer smoke form of mental issues--in the non-threatening sense. This is a fun single from her that shows a great deal of promise, she could do more, but this song will be a hit with young Arabic-speaking girls everywhere.

Please Amal Maher @Amal_Maher Change Your New Album Cover!

I was so happy to learn Amal Maher is going to reshoot some of the pictures for her upcoming album. The album will release on December 22 with Mazzika. But the album art cover seems to be tacy a bit strange for an artist that has been able to pull being cool without being cheap or losing her class. The early images we saw, left us confused.

The images were about this super woman outfit, very tight clothes in one color and do not really reflect Amal's personality. I think the fans were surprised by those images, so she decided to go for another shoot. Cannot wait to see the new pictures, but most of all the album will be gold form an artist who only takes songs from A listers.

Amal picks winners, and she showed us that in her 2011 album-each track was a goldmine and it was something that we did not anticipate-it was just a wholesome album. Not sure what her team was thinking when she took these pictures, I do not see anything artistic about them.

Salim Rashid Suri: The Singing Sailor of Oman

The story of Salim Rashid Suri illustrates how the gramophone helped bring different musical worlds together. While still in his teens, in the 1920s, this restless soul began to roam, working on trading ships that plied from his home town of Sur, an old Omani slaving port, along the Gulf to Bahrain, Kuwait and Iraq - and further afield, to East Africa, Yemen and India.

On board he would have heard unfamiliar accents and stories, and doubtless joined in with the rhythmic sea shanties that helped pass a long voyage.

He quickly found a talent for song, starting with maidan - an Omani form of sung poetry - then picking up more complex sowt (Arabic for "voice") from early gramophone recordings made in Baghdad by popular singer Abdullatif al-Kuwaiti.

But his desire to pursue a musical career, his skill on the oud (lute) and his growing fame as The Singing Sailor enraged Salim Rashid's conservative-minded family. His brother even threatened him with a gun.

But his desire to pursue a musical career, his skill on the oud (lute) and his growing fame as The Singing Sailor enraged Salim Rashid's conservative-minded family. His brother even threatened him with a gun.

So, in the late 1920s or early 1930s, he left Oman to settle in Bombay. There he worked as a trade broker - and deepened his musical reputation.

One of his most famous recordings, Bi Allah faasaalooha, dates from this period. It is notable for mixing the Arabic oud with strong Bombay influence in the clarinet - adopted from British military bands - and tabla drum.

Heba Mokhtar Releases A Flavorless Pop Song

Heba Mokhtar is back for her fans, this is really awesome. But For those who like good songs, they are disappointed. Does this song do anything new? I do not see it does, and it do not see this song allows Heba to be different than a 100 pop stars this once.

Here's an Egyptian blonde who has a lot going right for her, and her new songs does not capitalize on any of it. It's wonderful that she got a new song out at this time, but if the song does not offer anything fresh, is it really new?

She came a long way from her debut in 2000 when Hamid El Shari dubbed her the new Dalida--the iconic Egyptian Italian diva. Perhaps you wil begin to understand my frustration when you hear this earlier song by Heba

Video: The Ancient City Of Jerusalem Still Unites Arabs

Some Palestinian talents launched in Beirut an opretta for Jerusalem. Among the singers are Saudi Talal Salamah, Tunisian Lutfi Bouchnaq, Lebanese Brigit Yaghy, Jordinian Zain Awad, and the composer is from Egypt Salah Sharnoobi, Syrian Nora Rahal. Wait for it Adel Mahmoud from Bahrain. And From Palestine, there is Dalal Abu Amneh, and Ammar Haasan.

This is a major production and artists agreed to join the lineup. There are other names to be announced later. Though the set looks cheap and the artist deserve better. The city deserves more, but such projects are always tricky to green light.

For nine months, the producers and the artists have been working on it, Cairo is where it's being produced. This is a simple production on a theater. The operetta was in Egyptian  and modified standard Arabic, the message is hope. The officers behind this song have yet to release the full version, not sure when that will hit the airwaves. This is not a money-making venture, just an attempt to remind people of the constant Israeli threats against the city that's held by all the Abraham religions as holy.

Palestinian Artists Shame Politicians To Break The Gridlock

$

This is a song done calling for unity in Palestine. Politicians and militants drove us apart, let's hope music will be able to do what has been undone in 2007. Gaza Strip is another universe and the West Bank is lost somewhere, Jerusalem is under attack--nothing new there. It's a shame they cannot get their act together when there is so much at stake.

Two artists from Palestine local artists Ghassan Al Sheikh, and Niveen Al Sawy join forces to remind the people of the only flag that matters, Palestinian flag. They are joined by the young and innocent Bara'a whose voice stick out. Palestine is above all! I wish politicians in Palestine would remember that.

This is a song done in basic format, local artists do not have the means to produce a top-notch mastered song, but that won't stop them from doing what the like doing the most to help their motherland.

Note, the song was removed from Youtube

Brainy Arab Artist Supports The Beirut Marathon

Latifa of Tunis, joined May Khalil from Lebanon in support Lebanon marathon. Many Lebanese and people from other parts of the world turned out for this event. Latifa is not just a songstress, she is an activist and she has supported all Arab causes, but this is the first time she puts her weight behind a sporting event. Latifa is a pan Arab figure, I like what she has to say.

She is a proud of Tunisia, her home, but now it seems she has been a celebrity that turns out to all sorts of events. Latifa told us for the first time about her exercise and how she likes to be active. May Khalil did speak on this event and how she play a key role.

This is really nice that they are able to hold such sporting event to promote peace at this very scary time. I wish the interview gave us some statistics about the outcomes, and the number of participants. God bless Lebanon, and with it the rest of the region.

Watch @AsmaLmnawar Become The Coolest Moroccan Chick In Dubai

Asma Lmnawar has a world-class talent, a voice that is to envy, and looks that leave nothing to be desired. She started doing heavy songs that fit her style and propelled her into top of the line. She teamed up with Iraqi musican Kadem Al Saher and together they did two timeless duets. Right after all the fame, she took her talent into an affluent area. Moving Eastward to Dubai from Morocco. And that has been good for her.

Like the music video you will see here, it's a cool Moroccan song that is just delightful to listen to. Hakawa looks like a music video about youth, dance and diversity. I like the beat and it presents Asma in a new light. The mixing, the mastering are just perfect. This is a stepping stone for this diva who has yet to peak--she does so many new things without losing her base in the Gulf.

I must admit that Morocco is seeing a revival in its music coming form both inside and outside that exotic land. Asma did not have to exchange her soul to be hip, once she moved to the Gulf, she hit the ground running. She is hardly the only one from Morocco to go there, but she is shaping up to be the most active name.

Wael Jassar Covers A Warda Original In "Aal Eih Beysaalony"

Before pop songs, there was a Wael Jassar who wanted to do songs in the classical Arabic style, and we loved him for it. He took that a long way and has showed that he has nothing to proof, then he went the pop route and he was very successful. He did so many covers of those oldies, and for some younger folks, they know the songs as his.

take for example, his wonderful recreation of " Aal Eih Beysaalony" an original song that belongs of Warda, the late Algerian talent. He took that song to new lands, and introduced good and beautiful art to new generations. I consider myself a big fan of this Lebanese hit-maker. He is clever businessman whose big name is good in Egypt and great in Lebanon.

His rich voice can communicate happy, sad, enrgized, broken, humiliated, cheated and such. I am grateful for voices like his.

Palestinian Haitham Khalailah (Khalaili) Will Not Win Arab Idol!

$

0

I will be surprised if the young and charming contestant on Arab Idol Haitham Khalailah will go on to win the title of the third season of Arab Idol. Keep on mind, the second season was won fairly and squarely by none other than Mohammed Assaf who shattered records and packed so many venues around the world.

Now, Haitham Khalailah will always be compared to Assaf, they have different strengths, and interests. Haitham Khalailah, 24, from the historic Palestinian  village of Majd al-Krum was chosen to represent Palestine in the contest, one of the most widely watched programs in the Middle East. Each Saturday night Haitham Khalailah receives praises from the judges for his performance. They all agreed about his talent and advanced him to the next stage without reservations. Haitham continues to gain followers in the Arab world.

. His continuation on the program is based on his talent, charm and calculations from the MBC and advertiser. Haithm is great for rating, he brings the attention of the press, activism and a global diaspora of Palestinians and friends. Haitham faces off against, a Saudi contestant and a Syrian one. They are formidable candidates and both have marketing and talents.

If I had to call if, I think the Saudi would have a big chance since the network is owned by Saudis and it's a big business to advertise to this market. Past winners from that part of the world has not survived and have not manged to do anything in the years after the program ended. Plus Saudis are funny about music, so he may not be able to do many public events within the Kingdom.

Syrians have the talent and the stories to back their stardom, but the country is divided and most of its people are broke around the Middle East now. Plus, the contestant may have to answer political questions and tests.

I would love it if Haitham wins, he is pretty entertaining and he comes form a community that feels to have been ripped away form the greater Arab community. Haitham chose to be a Palestinian since he has an Israeli citizenship and upon his return to his village, you can rest assured the Israelis will harass the hell out of him and investigate him. Haitham is already a star, he does not need the title to sell concerts to the Palestinian community at large. If you want to know how popular he is, just look at the official view count on Arab Idol YouTube channel, his videos get the more hits

Here's To The Syrian Black Widow Rouwaida Attieh

$

Don't let his love cancel you our....talk is cheap are some of the fine lyrics form a new song by the Syrian black widow Rouwaida Attieh. The man behind the song is none but the hottest Lebanese composer, musician and singer Salim Assaf

In a radio interview, the artist spoke about the story behind this song,  it was inspired by a phone conversation with his mother who told him the main line "no one knows what's in the other person's heart" Hence came this cone form the heart and it was a summer hit summer. Which is odd because moving songs like that do not often come in the summer. The song was meant to be for the summer, but summers are saved for happy go luck songs..let's dance types.

I think the sadness in Rouwaida's voice is coming from a real place, I would give her the Oscar for best moving performance. Without looking at her, you hear the woes and the sadness in her voice. Very few artists can do that, and this is harder for Rouwaida specially that she has a very strong voice. The sorrow might be coming from what she sees happen in Syria on the ground.

The Best Mawal For Your Money! Thank You Melhem Zein @melhem_zein

Melhem Zein is not a star made for the social media and the new media, he is a star who seems to have landed in the wrong time. An old fashioned artist who likes to be a private citizen even when he is always on TV and the airwaves. He is a singer with that distinct all-Lebanese flavor. He is not one of the pretty boys of Beirut, he is a manly man. Rugged, scruffy and candid....just like I think of my pops.

See him to live up to all what I am saying about him in this retro performance that makes you think, did not my pops used to listen to this song on their village cafe in the 30s? This is how Melhem sounds her and he much he gets into this song about family and country.

I think we have only seen twenty percent of what Melhem is capable of--we may be suckers for commercial hits, but he is so much more. You cannot beat that Mawal.

Boob Twerking Video And Why Egyptian Movies Bomb

$
0
0

The formula for Egyptian movies has been revealed and in a funny way. I have been saying this for some time now, but this video puts it in a funny and true way. He mocks these belly dancers--really some shocking footage (Boob twerking)

They do not win awards these movies, and most of these movies are all the same plot, and 40 percent of these flicks are made in one studio---El Sobky. It's a sad day to look at movies in the past and now. They do make at least one good movie in Egypt each year, but for every good movie, they make 20 trashy flicks.

Here's how they make them....
  1. Bring some guy to play thug
  2. Bring in some belly dancers--one, two, or three let them shake it all.
  3. Bring some sissy dudes and let them sing and say sill stuff and make it look like a party.
  4. Shot some fight scnes, bring out the machet
  5. Film a cafe and lame dialogues, lines that make little sense
  6. Assault the public tastes, ruin classical songs
